The New Generation of Social Media Marketing
By Chas Salmore

By the time you read this article, every statistic cited below will already be obsolete. That’s how fast the evolving world of social media and online communities is changing. For example, Facebook, the free-access social networking website, now tops 225 million users and is growing at the rate of approximately 1 million new users per day. Statistics just released by comScore Media Metrix on Twitter traffic reveals visitor growth through this micro-blog has doubled in less than one year. Surprisingly, 45-to-54-year-olds are the top “Tweet” demographic and 25-to-34-year-olds follow closely behind in second.

So what is ahead? Over the past year, there has been a rapid shift in social distribution online. According to Michael Arrington, founder and co-editor of Techcrunch, a leading weblog dedicated to profiling and examining the commercial and/or cultural impact on new media, “There appears to be a new distribution model which is emerging, one which is based on people’s ability to publicly syndicate and distribute messages — aka “content” — in a transparent and open manner.”

Essentially, this has been a part of the Internet since day one, yet now it’s emerging in a different form. It’s not pages that are important. Instead, it is streams that drive user participation. The growth of new (and still to be discovered) platforms will open up vast, new and exciting applications and engagement channels in the months and years ahead.

New Study Signals Rough Times Ahead for Traditional Media

News on November 2nd, 2009 No Comments

This article originally appeared in the August, 2009 issue of electronicRetailer magazine and was written by Editor-in-chief Vitisia Paynich. It is reprinted here with permission. A PDF version of this article is also available.

In its July 25 edition, Newsweek made a bold statement by actually proclaiming on its cover: “The Recession is Over!” Call me a skeptic but when the national unemployment rate is closing in on 10 percent, that kind of statement offers cold comfort—especially to marketers who participated in a recent Forrester study.

According to the research firm, 60 percent of marketers say they will decrease their traditional media budgets and allocate that revenue toward interactive marketing. Among the marketing channel casualties are direct mail, which 40 percent of marketers say they will cut from their budgets—followed by newspapers at 35 percent and magazines at 28 percent. Today, marketers are shifting their direct-mail dollars to a paperless method: e-mail marketing. In fact, e-mail marketing accounts for $1.25 billion in spending and it’s
predicted to rise by 11 percent.

Forrester Research finds that marketers plan to step up their spending with such interactive marketing channels as social media and mobile marketing over the next five years. Looking at the numbers this year, social media marketing expenditures have already reached the $716 million mark in 2009 and are expect-
ed to hit $3.11 billion by 2014.

For those of you who still think mobile is in its infancy stage, marketing expenditures began the year at $319 million and are forecast to increase to $1.27 billion over the next five years. Those numbers are quite sobering…don’t you think?

Social media marketing succeeding

News on October 3rd, 2009 No Comments

ADOTAS — Though its use in advertising is still evolving, evidence is emerging that social networks can be used for branding, improving customer loyalty, lead generation, direct marketing and e-commerce.

“The beauty of social networks is that they are a place where nearly any marketing goal can be achieved, with nearly any marketing tactic,” according to Debra Aho Williamson, eMarketer senior analyst and author of the new report, “Marketing on Social Networks: Branding, Buying and Beyond.”

In a MarketingSherpa survey, 92% of social media marketing respondents said social media marketing was effective at influencing brand reputation and 91% said it worked for increasing brand awareness. These executives found it far less effective for generating sales leads or increasing online sales.
